The .DST file extension is a widely used vector graphic file format for embroidery machines. It was created by Tajima Corporation as a proprietary format for their popular series of embroidery digitizing software. DST files can be opened and edited with any version of Tajima DGML or Pulse Master and are also supported by many other professional embroidery programs, such as Wilcom and Singer X-Site.
The DST format consists of two components - the stitch commands and the machine setup commands. The stitch commands consist of a series of X-Y coordinates, stitching parameters (length, direction and type of stitch) and jumps, which define where threads are to be placed upon a fabric. The machine setup commands contain information regarding the sequence of colors that must be used in completing the design, thread tension, speed of the needle bar and so forth. DST also has a built-in compression algorithm, where it stores commands in multiple passes instead of storing them one by one.
