PAT is a .PAT data file type associated with various Adobe Photoshop products. A PAT file typically contains a set of related raster graphics which are utilized as patterns, or backgrounds, in Photoshop documents. The contents may also include geometric shapes or objects, such as lines, polygons, circles, and ellipses. The pattern may also include custom text created from fonts already installed on the user's system. Content inside PAT files is usually implemented through the “Scripted patterns” feature of Photoshop.
PAT files are implemented into a Photoshop project through the software's “Edit” menu by selecting "Fill," then "Patterns" from the dropdown list of available options. The PAT pattern can then be applied to any layer of the active document. Commonly these are used as a background, but they can also be overlayed as a means of texturing or abstracting images. PAT files are cross platform compatible and can typically be opened on both Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows systems.
