The .MIDI file extension is a Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) file. MIDI files contain instructions on how a specific instrument or group of instruments should produce sound. These instructions are defined using data and codes stored in the MIDI file. MIDI files are popularly used in music production due to their low size. In comparison to audio files, such as MP3s, MIDI files are considerably smaller, and require less storage space.
MIDI files can be opened and processed using various music software, such as Steinberg Cubase, Apple Logic Pro, Cakewalk Sonar, and Ableton Live. Besides these popular audio software suites, MIDI files can also be opened by some media player software, mobile devices running the Android OS, iOS devices, and some web browsers. Usually, the easiest way to play an MIDI file is through a MIDI player application such as MIDI Player Pro for Desktop or MIDI Player for Mobile devices.
Creating and Saving MIDI Files
Music production software such as digital audio workstations have comprehensive virtual instruments that can be used to create and edit MIDI files. An instrument's interface displays keys, knobs, pads and sliders which can be used to produce different sounds. Once desired instruments settings are achieved - like adjusting the tone and pitch of different notes - the file can then be saved in the.MIDI format. Some music software can also save MIDI files in other formats such as GMID, .KAR, and .MUS.

Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .MIDI) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .MIDI extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .MIDI file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .MIDI extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .MIDI extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .MIDI file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .MIDI file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .MIDI file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .MIDI file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .MIDI file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
