ACT! Lookup Format | The Sage Group | Database Files |
The ALF file extension is an acronym for ACT! Lookup File, a database file type used specifically by the popular customer relationship management software distributed by Swiftpage Inc. An ALF file is used to store information such as customer records, notes, tasks and other data that is commonly stored in a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system. The file contains numerous tables with interrelated lookup information, with each table assigned a unique field ID and containing rows and columns of data related to the given field ID. The ALF file format is an efficient way to store and read these sorts of data, making them easily editable within the ACT! software suite.
ALF File Formatting Details
The ALF file format consists of two sections. The preamble section contains details about the file type, version number, row count, field ID’s and other metadata. The second section contains the actual data and can include additional attributes such as lookup values and identifiers for related past or future databases. In addition, some ALF files are designed to include notes or other comments associated with specific records.
Having a set structure makes the ALF file format easy to read and understand for developers who wish to incorporate it into their own applications. Other similar file formats include .edb, .sdf, .iif, and .wdb. It should also be noted that the files do not have any official algorithms designated for compression; however, many third-party programs offer compression tools to reduce the size of the larger.ALF files created by ACT!.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .ALF) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .ALF extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .ALF file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .ALF extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .ALF extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .ALF file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .ALF file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .ALF file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .ALF file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .ALF file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
