MUS is an acronym for .MUS files, or Finale Notation File Format. MUS is a proprietary format introduced by MakeMusic Inc. in 1988 as part of the Finale music editing software package. The format stores musical scores as digital objects with a wide variety of individual formatting elements and properties. It supports page layout, graphical integration, playback control, file sharing, notation, and metadata features.
Design and Features
MUS files are composed of common musical notation elements such as note values, time signature, time duration, key signatures, ties and slurs. The notation can be represented in both traditional staff notation or on guitars, pianos and other instruments which support tablature. The program also includes specialized tools for inputting lyrics and percussion sounds into the score. Page layout features include features such as page size adjustments fonts, font sizing and text alignment. An embedded graphic also allows the user to add visual art to their works. The format also supports playback control with support for Direct Proof printing and XML publishing. Files contain annotations which allow users to generate file exchange documents created in Open XML format without changing their existing workflow.
Compatibility
MUS files are compatible with Finale versions 2015 up to the present day, however legacy versions (such as Finale 2008) can still open the files as well. MakeMusic offers several online viewing tools for MUS files free of charge so that viewers do not need to install additional software in order to read the file. MUS files are also commonly supported by programs such as Carnet de Vol, Notepad, PrintMusic, Guitar Pro, and Quintessential Player. MUS files can often be converted to other formats such as PDF, MIDI ( .MID) and WAV ( .WAV) using third-party utilities.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .MUS) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .MUS extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .MUS file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .MUS extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .MUS extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .MUS file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .MUS file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .MUS file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .MUS file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .MUS file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
