The 3DP file extension stands for the 3D Photo Scene Data file developed with Autodesk 123D Catch. Autodesk 123D Catch is a free Windows application used to capture, edit and share 3D models of physical objects. The software utilizes photo stitching to capture a 360-degree view of an object based on full color photos taken from multiple angles. The resulting scene’s data can then be exported as a 3DP file and includes the geometry, textures, backgrounds, and lighting of the generated 3D scene.
The 3DP file may consist of any number of photographs that are captured around an object utilizing the software's photo stitching feature. It stores the information related to the object's surface geometry, camera settings and light conditions. The mesh stored in 3DP files contains hundreds of thousands of triangles making up the 3D model’s surface. This makes it possible to create realistic renderings with shadows and reflections easily with the Autodesk Raytracer. The RayTracer is another tool in the Autodesk 123D suite which allows users to generate real photos from their 3DP files.
