The STL ( .STL) file extension is one of the most widely used mesh formats. It was developed by 3D Systems Corporation for use with its proprietary STL-Format 3D Printer. The STL file format is a simple, of binary format which records the surface geometry of a 3D object as a series of colored facets. A binary STL file is typically composed of geometric facet information and some metadata, such as the RGB color values for the facets. The most common use for.STL format files is to transfer surface geometry from a 3D model to a 3D printer or plotting machine.
Uses of.STL Files
The.STL format is widely used in the stereolithography (SLA) and Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) 3D printing processes in which models are built up layer-by-layer from a base material, such as powder or liquid resin. In addition, STL files can also be used in the Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining process when used in tandem with software such as Autodesk Fusion 360, GrabCAD Print, and others. The mesh created by the STL file contains millions of triangular faces which can be joined together in order to approximate organic shapes more accurately.
Similar File Extensions
Other related file extensions widely used in the 3D printing industry include .OBJ, .AMF, 3MF, and .OFF. These file types are all intended to store 3D objects, although each follows a different set of standards and is optimized for different uses. Most major software packages, such as Autodesk's design suite, can export any of these formats.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .STL) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .STL extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .STL file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .STL extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .STL extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .STL file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .STL file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .STL file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .STL file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .STL file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
