APNG (Animated Portable Network Graphics) is a file format for animated images that were introduced as an extension of the PNG image file format. APNG files allow for simple, frame-based animation similar to the GIF image format, making them suitable for creating and displaying small animations on websites or within applications. APNG files are larger in size than GIF files due to the extra data needed to store the individual frames and may contain up to 256 levels of transparency—higher than what is available with GIF. All major web browsers support APNG files, such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Apple Safari. While not as widely supported as GIF files, Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, and other image editing programs can be used to both create and view APNG files.
Technical Details
APNG files are saved in the same way as standard .PNG images, with the added ability to store more frames in a stream of IDAT chunks. Each chunk contains code that describes its type (e.g., JPG or PNG coding); the length of its data characteristic; and its animation sequence. The animation sequence is constructed from encoded data blocks that contain a single, compressed frame. APNG files can also contain delta frames which are only partially encoded, allowing changes between successive frames to be stored more efficiently. It is also possible to combine delta frames with regular frames to achieve a higher quality animation after only delivering small amounts of data.
Due to its relative popularity, APNG has been included in a number of file formats and specifications such as .WEBM, .AVI, and even has support for animation thumbnails in the .ICO file format. Other image file formats supporting animation include: .MNG, .TIF, and .JPEG.

Programs for MAC system
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .APNG) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .APNG extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .APNG file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .APNG extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .APNG extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .APNG file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .APNG file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .APNG file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .APNG file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .APNG file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
