The MNG file extension stands for Multiple-image Network Graphics. It is a lossless, lossy, or hybrid bitmap image format and video-streaming format, developed by members of the libmng library project. MNG is an extension of the standard PNG format; it was designed for animation purposes and extends the features of PNG to include multiple images per file, more control over timing and color and better compression. With MNG, it is possible to store a sequence of images in a single file to create animations.
Technical Details
MNG is a complex bidirectional chunk-based file format with extensibility through private chunks. The defined chunks are classified as control chunks, equality chunks, object chunks, text chunks, and drop targets. The source code is written in C and ANSI C plus the accompanying AMD assembler implementation for graphical media processors based on the x86. Owing to its complexity the MNG format is not as widely supported as other image formats, but with support from some commercial applications such as Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Apple preview.
Similar Extensions
In addition to MNG, there are other bitmap image formats out there such as JPG, GIF, JPEG, TIFF, BMP, and .PCT. All these formats support simple still images while only MNG supports bitmap animations. Therefore, when dealing with animation graphics with a broad range of frame rates, color depths, frames sizes and so on, MNG is the preferred choice.
