The .PCT file extension is associated with a type of bitmap image. It is a type of vector graphics and metafile format developed by Apple Computer, Inc., in the early 1980s. With the introduction of MacDraw, the company bundled its proprietary PCT format files with the program. It was used to store both vector shapes and bitmap images within a single file. PCT files featured multiple levels for combining and editing vector shapes and bitmapped objects.
The well-known and reliable predecessor of PCT was the MACPICT format, but it had certain limitations. For one, most vector shape data was only accessible through MacPaint, making it difficult to move between programs. Apple then introduced PCT as a more capable image format, adding more flexible layers and other features that made it easiest for editing and publishing in a variety of Mac applications.
