Pro Tools Session Format | Avid Technology | Audio Files |
The PTS (Pro Tools Session) file extension is a native audio session format used to store compositions and recordings created with Avid Pro Tools digital audio workstation, now owned by Avid Technology Inc.
Files with the.PTS extension are typically stored as binary files that contain project data specific to Pro Tools users, including references to any audio and MIDI files, plug-in settings, automation data, and other information related to an audio session. Along with the project files, such sessions will sometimes include auxiliary files like tempo maps or User Default files. For example, in a Pro Tools session folder there may be one or more .BWF, .MOV, .AIFF, .MP3, .WAV, or other media files referenced by the PTS file.
Pro Tools Session Files Overview
PTS files are composed of a series of proprietary segment and chunk headers that provide session state information which can then be loaded into memory by the Pro Tools application. All of these components combined allow a user to open and continue a recorded workflow from where it left off previously. In addition, the PTS format also stores functions specific to Pro Tools such as fade types, signal path definitions and resources used within a given session.
Other Audio Session Formats
Similar audio session formats are provided by other Digital Audio Workstations (DAW) including: Logic Studio's .logic, REAPER's .rpp, Nuendo's nprj, Cakewalk Sonar's .cwt, Adobe Audition's .sesx, Band-in-a-Box's .SGU and Steinberg Cubase's .cpr. Though compatible projects still need to be exchanged in some cases by using the respective project export feature of each DAW.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .PTS) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .PTS extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .PTS file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .PTS extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .PTS extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .PTS file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .PTS file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .PTS file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .PTS file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .PTS file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
