The AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) file extension is a generally lossless audio format. Developed by Apple Inc., it was the first mainstream audio file format developed for the Macintosh personal computer system. AIFF is based on the .IFF format created by Electronic Arts for use with its Electronic Music Synthesizers. This format was adopted by Apple and modified using the IFF ‘8SVX’ format for the Macintosh. Today, the AIFF has become a standard cross-platform method of storing digital audio as PCM audio data.
Features & Benefits
The AIFF is an ideal choice for storing high-quality, uncompressed sound files with up to 24-bit/192kHz sample rate efficiency. It is well-suited for larger sample files, as it can support several channels of audio and has better speed and bandwidth than MP3. Additionally, the AIFF lack of compression makes it ideal for preserving quality in archiving and mixing in high-end recording studios. As such, this file extension can also be shared across multiple platforms, including Windows, Linux, macOS other UNIX platforms, and even embedded systems.
Although AIFF files can be created on any platform using special software like avconv, Sonic Visualiser, QuickTime Player or iTunes, it is most commonly associated with Macintosh systems or seen as a popular output format from the software programs Pro Tools. It is also widely used as the main file type for exchanging PCM Audio files since other file formats such as WAV ( .wav) or FLAC ( .flac) tend towards different languages and bit depths/sample rates.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .AIFF) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .AIFF extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .AIFF file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .AIFF extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .AIFF extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .AIFF file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .AIFF file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .AIFF file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .AIFF file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .AIFF file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
