Apple QuickTime Digital Movie Format | Apple | Video Files |
The MOV ( MOV) file format is a commonly-used container for digital multimedia on the Apple Macintosh platform. It is based on the QuickTime movie ( QuickTime) container format developed by Apple Inc. and standardized in SMPTE's RFC 2326. The MOV format is currently used to store both audio and video data, as well as meta data for interactive applications. The MOV file format can support video up to 8-bits per pixel and audio up to 16-bits per sample. Additionally, the MOV file format supports multiple sampling rates and multiple-channel audio. It also supports indexed 16×16 ARGB graphics palette images, pixel masks, and alpha channel layers.
Characteristics of the MOV File Format
The MOV file format is a hierarchical container that can contain several different types of media objects at once. This allows for multiple video or audio tracks in addition to interactive graphics and motion effects. The four major components contained inside an MOV file are audio content, video content, motion effects, and interactive data. Other file formats similar to the MOV file type include MP4, AVI, MPG, FLV, and DIVX. The format also supports formatting options such as text wraps, line breaks, paragraph orderings, text styles, tables, video overlay with alpha values, annotations in documents, image comments and much more.
MOV files are typically compressed using either the H.264 encoding algorithm or a combination of MPEG-4SP (Simple Profile) and AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) for audio compression. Additionally, newer versions of QuickTime may support other compression algorithms including DV, M-JPEG, Animoji XDR, and many others. Some versions of QuickTime may also provide support for nonlinear editing operations such as speed changes and exact frame positioning. Additionally, some versions of QuickTime may support MCI (Media Control Interface) commands allowing for advanced device interaction functionality such as adjusting volume or playback rate from an application or script.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .MOV) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .MOV extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .MOV file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .MOV extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .MOV extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .MOV file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .MOV file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .MOV file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .MOV file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .MOV file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
