The WLD (ESRI World File) file extension is a file format associated with ArcGIS software developed by Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI). It contains raster georeferencing information about the coordinates of the edges of a raster image in a plain text format, enabling software to orient and display the image correctly. WLD files store four parameters defining the location, scale and rotation of the specified geographic area, allowing coordinate systems to be shifted to different interpretations. This information is stored in six lines with three coordinates each.
Technical Information
A WLD File can be created automatically when importing a raster image into ArcGIS or QGIS. The file includes numeric values that describe the origin, rotation and cell size of a data set raster. These metadata parameters determine both georeferencing and geometric transformations for an exported image. The coordinates are saved as affine transformations which open up for advanced manipulation of the images, such as rectifying and mosaicking. The file also includes a header written in plain text which provides basic information about .wld file such as version number, author etc.
Unique Characteristics & Similar Extensions
WLD files have a unique combination of simplicity and accuracy in storing geographic reference information associated to an image, since its format does not require any particular GIS platform. It is also largely accepted by most mainstream GIS applications that import raster files, making it ideal to transfer data between different software platforms. Some similar common file extensions are .pgw, .gfw, .jgw, .tfw, and .tab.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .WLD) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .WLD extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .WLD file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .WLD extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .WLD extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .WLD file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .WLD file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .WLD file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .WLD file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .WLD file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
