The JGW file extension is associated with the .JPG and .JPEG file formats. This is a metadata file format used to represent Georeferencing information in associations with JPEG World files. It is a text-based file, which stores longitude and latitude positional data on an image within the document. The JGW contains data from a Geographic Information System and is able to display a map for any geographical point in the world. It is used to geo-reference images, where a specific location of an image can be referenced back to its source.
Technical Details
The JGW file format supports the Exchangeable Image File Format (EXIF) standard for JPEG world files. It allows users to assign geographic location data to JPEG images. This metadata includes coordinates in decimal degrees of USA National Atlas Equal Area projection (NAD83), which consist of several parts: Longitude/X-axis using positive (East) or negative (West) orientation; Latitude/Y-axis using positive (North) or negative (South) orientation; Horizontal Pixel size of the image; Vertical Pixel size of the image; and Optionally angular rotation of the image using clockwise orientation.
