ER Mapper Data Format | ERDAS | GIS Files |
An .ERS (or ER Mapper Data File) file is a proprietary raster graphics file format developed by ERMapper. This advanced image file type enables users to store and exchange information in a highly efficient way and is commonly used in geographic or remote sensing applications.
Using their proprietary .ECW, ECWX and .CMP image formats, ER Mapper developed the .ERS file to allow users to work with raster datasets while still affording control over banding, and usage of available color palettes.
File Functionality
Data stored in an .ERS file typically consists of satellite imagery, digital elevation models, shaded reliefs and other heavy-duty analysis. The file format also provides support for standard 8-bit sRGB images with 3 bands, 8-bit RGB images with 4 bands, 16-bit signed integer images with 4 bands and 32-bit floating-point images with 4 bands. Since these files are intended for more powerful applications, they must be accompanied by the right software in order to open them properly; this includes other ER Mapper products such as ER Mapper Image Web Server ( ERMIWS) and ER Mapper Image for Autodesk MapGuide ( ERMIAMG).
Compatibility With Other File Types
In addition to the other global imagery formats used by ER Mapper, the .ERS file type is also able to read in and output other popular image types, including TIFF ( TIF/.TIFF) and JPEG ( JPG/.JPEG/.JPE/.JFIF) formats. For compatibility on systems running earlier versions of Windows OS, it is sometimes necessary to first convert the .ERS file into another image format before being able to view or work with the data.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .ERS) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .ERS extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .ERS file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .ERS extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .ERS extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .ERS file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .ERS file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .ERS file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .ERS file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .ERS file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
