The TFW file extension is a World File for TIFF, which is an image file format developed by Aldus Corporation in 1986 in order the support storage of high-resolution images. The TFW files are associated with GIS (Geographic Information System) applications, and they provide auxiliary information about the location of TIF (Tagged Image File Format) image files. This information includes pixel resolution, rotation and geographic coordinates.
The main purpose of TFW files is to associate a specific image with its real world coordinates in order to be able to map the image into an application such as AutoCAD or AutoDesk. A complete set of coordinates requires both the TFW file and a .TIF, .TIFF, .JPG, or .GIF file. Image viewers such as ArcSoft PhotoStudio, Microsoft Office Picture Manager or Apple Preview, are able to open and view these types of files.
