The UNL .UNL file extension is used with a Garmin device and the proprietary unlocking files associated with them. These files are used with certain Garmin maps to enable unlocking locked/encrypted maps for a particular region or area to allow users to access the mapping features of their device and take advantage of an upgraded version of the map. These files must match exactly the version of the map being want to unlock. An example being that if an updated version of the map is released and the user purchases this version, they must apply the updated.UNL file to obtain all of the new features.

Garmin unlocks are often confused with other similar file extensions such as .XML, .IMG, .TXT, NMEA and .GPX but are distinct and unique from these other formats.
Unlocking Procedure
The unlock procedure consists of creating a.udb file from a locked map file, registering and uploading this using a USB connection in a computer browser, which will then generate a uniquely generated unlock code for the.UNL file. This is required before the unlock file can be applied. The UNL file can then be transferred back to the Garmin Device to unlock secure versions of map data files which may have previously been inaccessible.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .UNL) with the new application.
