Floppy Image Image Format | Apple | Disk Image Files |
The IMG (Macintosh Disk Image) .IMG file extension is a virtual disk image used to hold computer data. Created using the HFSExplorer utility, an IMG file contains information from a physical hard drive or another type of storage device and is stored in a non-OS-specific disk image format. With the IMG format, the data stored in an image is exactly the same as what is stored on the source drive.
If files, folders, or a drive has been backed up as an IMG file, it can be accessed by any operating system at the user’s discretion without being altered. The IMG file is designed to be compatible with various operating systems such as Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10, macOS and Linux.
Similar File Formats
IMG files are similar to .ISO, .BIN, and .CUE file formats used on computers for storing data.
Using IMG Files
Once created, IMG files can be opened with compatible software such as Magic ISO Maker, PowerISO, or other image tools. The user can also access the content of an IMG file by mounting it virtually on the computer with compatible software. This will allow the user to open, edit or make changes to the data present within the disk image.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .IMG) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .IMG extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .IMG file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .IMG extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .IMG extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .IMG file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .IMG file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .IMG file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .IMG file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .IMG file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
