JPEG 2000 Image Format (ISO 15444-1) Format | Joint Photographic Experts Group | Raster Image Files |
The JP2 (JPEG 2000 Core Image File) is a file format developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group for use in digital photography applications. It is also known as JPEG 2000 Part 1, and is different from the JPG image file format. JPEG 2000 is a significant improvement over traditional JPEG, featuring improved compression Levels, bit-depth level support, and color spaces. It is a high-quality lossy compression that produces better details and colors than the JPEG standard.
The format offers enhanced features for storing identification, scientific, or technical information, including resolution information, geographic or geospatial coordinates, time stamps, and color space information. It provides higher compression rates than traditional JPEG formats, while offering significantly improved quality at the same compressed file size. Additionally, it can be used in applications with ISO basesd definition such as the Open Geospatial Consortium's OGC: Web Mapping Service or Metadata Encoding & Transmission Standard.
File Extension Compatibility and Other Details
The File Extension .JP2 is compatible with all Windows OS, Mac OS, iOS and Android platforms. Other file extensions such as J2K, JPX, JPF, PDT, MJ2 are similar but not compatible with the JP2 file. According to the NIST standard document IR-7243 for Use of JPEG 2000 in Federal Agencies, “It is a baseline scalable interactive image coding system that enables progressive decode operations under constrained random access.”
Application Support
JP2 (JPEG 2000 Core Image File) files are widely supported by almost all image-editing software like Adobe Photoshop ( Photoshop), GIMP ( GIMP) and many other popular image-editing programs such as Paint Shop Pro ( Paint Shop Pro), Corel Photopaint ( Corel Photopaint) and Corel Draw ( Corel Draw) just to name a few. Additionally, Web browsers like Internet Explorer ( Internet Explorer) Chrome ( Chrome) and Firefox ( Firefox)
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .JP2) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .JP2 extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .JP2 file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .JP2 extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .JP2 extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .JP2 file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .JP2 file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .JP2 file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .JP2 file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .JP2 file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
