The .PRC file extension has been around since the early days of eBook standards, first developed in 1999 when ebook readers were first gaining traction. This file extension was originally used by Mobipocket Reader, one of the first competing ebook readers, as well as DRM (Digital Rights Management) software. This file format is now used as a general purpose ebook format, meaning that it can store books, documents, newspapers and magazines.
Technical Details
PRC files are based on the Palm Operating System and employ PRC exe files for encryption. While DRMed files do have an additional layer of security, this is not a requirement and any valid PRC file can be converted to an unencrypted.mo format. When conversion from.prc is done, a set of HTML files are created from which the ebook content can be further edited if desired. The file format supports text, images and font sizes as well as links and other enhanced formatting options.
