LIDAR Point Cloud Data Format | ASTM E57 Committee on 3D Imaging Systems | 3D Image Files |
The E57 file extension is associated with the .e57 format, which is a vendor-neutral, open-source format for recording 3D point cloud data and is used to store 3D laser scan data. It is a structured binary format developed by the ASTM International Committee for Interoperability of 3D Imaging Systems, intended to act as an interchange format similar to what JPEG and MP3 formats are for images and audio respectively. The files are commonly used in the fields of engineering, architecture, surveying and construction, as well as in 3D printing.
The .e57 format is based on a modified version of the IEEE Standard for Floating-point Arithmetic (IEEE 754) and also supports sparse sequencing of records for efficient memory use. Data stored with this format can include multiple point clouds or other 3D image objects with each element containing X, Y and Z coordinates along with an intensity value associated to it. Other data elements can also be optionally added.
Compatibility
The .e57 files are natively supported by various software programs like Trimble RealWorks, Cyclone, Autodesk ReCap, and Geomagic Design X. The files can be viewed but not edited using free software such as CloudCompare Viewer. Additionally, some of the other formats related to the E57 file types include XYZ, PTS, LAS, PCD and more.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .E57) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .E57 extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .E57 file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .E57 extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .E57 extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .E57 file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .E57 file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .E57 file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .E57 file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .E57 file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
