The PQI file extension stands for PowerQuest Drive Image, a disk image technology developed by PowerQuest Corporation, that is currently owned by Symantec Corporation. It is used for creating a full backup of a computer hard drive and system state with all installed applications and settings, which can then be restored in case of a crash, virus or some other data loss. The PQI file extension is related to the Norton Ghost, an imaging tool for creating backups.
PQI files come in two versions - compressed and uncompressed. The Compressed version (.PQI) is approximately the same size as the drive it was created on and also contains a self-extracting program. It is an ideal solution for quickly transferring data from one computer to another, or for securely archiving large amounts of data. The Uncompressed version (.PQI_) requires a PowerQuest product to read or write the image. Also, this version can be written across multiple disks.
