Norton Ghost Backup Image Format | Symantec | Backup Files |
The GHO file extension is associated with the Norton Ghost, which is a data backup and disk imaging software solution developed by Symantec Corporation. This software enables users to create full system backups to a disk or network drive, which are stored as single GHO files. GHO files can also be used to differnetiate these from other backup files such as GHS, GHX, and GHO.
File Structure Overview
The GHO file format was designed to provide a centralized, compressed storage system for user's data backups. It includes a Symantec header that stores global information such as drive size, sector size, and buffer length along with recovery related information such as encryption, password protection, and CRC settings. The remainder of the file stores raw image data from the source partitions/volumes that were backed-up, compressed in zip archives.
Creating GHO Files
Norton Ghost provides users with the capabilities to create GHO files locally as well as over the network via its remote-sensing technology. A user has the ability to select between incremental backup routines and ‘Full System Backup,’ however in both cases compression can be enabled or disabled. Additionally, users have the ability to configure settings so that certain content that appears to be insignificant or expendable is excluded from being backed-up. These settings allow users to maximize their available backup space without comprising data integrity.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .GHO) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .GHO extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .GHO file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .GHO extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .GHO extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .GHO file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .GHO file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .GHO file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .GHO file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .GHO file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
