GHS ( .GHS) is a Norton Ghost Image Segment file extension which stores a segment of the compressed image created by the Ghost software. It is used to store sectors of disk files when a user performs a system backup using a utility provided by Norton Ghost. The GHS file type is associated with Symantec Ghost which is a hard drive cloning and backup solution for personal and enterprise users.
A GHS image segment is demarcated from other types of image backup formats, such as .GHO, .GBI, .V2I and VMK. The former two are specific file formats used to store the complete image created by the Ghost application whereas the V2I extensions is proprietary image format used to backup virtual disk files or virtual machine disks. The VMK extension is usually associated with VMware applications and is used to save disk partitions on physical and virtual computers.
A GHS image segment serves as part of a completeGhost backup image that enables users to restore entire disks by combining several image segments. When multiple images must be combined to restore a disk, they must remain uncompressed in order to be sufficiently addressed when restored. This ensures that none of the segments are deleted or corrupted during whole recovery procedure. Furthermore, even if some of GHS image segments become corrupted, it remains possible to initiate recovery or repair procedure using remaining, uncorrupted segments.
Uses
The main purpose behind creating GHS image segments is that they can be used to back up very large hard drive partitions that may exceed the amount of available free memory needed to back up an entire hard drive in one instance. The Ghost application divides such dataset into manageable segments, usually ranging in size from 1 MB up to 10 MB, and stores them as GHS files. Such data can then be later reconstructed on demand by running automatic recovery patch or restoring individual data blocks.
Other similar file extensions include: .GHO, .V2I, .GBI, .FD, VXI, and VMK.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .GHS) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .GHS extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .GHS file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .GHS extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .GHS extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .GHS file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .GHS file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .GHS file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .GHS file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .GHS file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
