The FD ( .FD) file type is the acronym for LaTeX Font Definition file format. A FD file contains definitions for designing the typographic layout of a document. It is used for LaTeX documents, which are text-based documents written in a markup language based on open source software provided by the TeX document preparation system. It is considered a standard for scientific research papers due to its precise documentation of layout and design.
Usage
The FD file is used by TeX-based programs such as LaTeX and XeTeX. For instance, when using LaTeX to create a document, FD files are referenced to define all the basic program parameters when creating fonts and manipulate them into whatever style desired by the user. The file allows users to control metrics, design sizes and colours in documents using mathematical commands. It also facilitates the definition of additional font parameters like small caps, slant, spacing, boldness, and size.

Besides the FD format there are other related formats compatible with TeX-based software such as Adobe Font Metric ( .AFM) files used to store character metrics information, Printer Font Binary ( .PFB) and Printer Font Metrics ( .PFM) files used for storing drawing information. There’s also TeX Font Metric ( .TFM) files which contains all metadata regarding font metrics of one particular typeface in one specific size. It also stores character widths, character heights as well as other characteristics of the typeface.
Programs for MAC system
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .FD) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .FD extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .FD file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .FD extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .FD extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .FD file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .FD file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .FD file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .FD file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .FD file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
