The *.ost file extension is an Outlook Offline File related to the Microsoft Outlook program. OST files are used to store Outlook mailbox data on a local machine (desktop, laptop) as a backup – allowing emails, notes, contacts, tasks and other items to be synchronized between the server and client computer.
How Does It Work?
OST files are linked to a specific outlook mailbox and can contain email messages, emails folders, calendar entries, contacts, task lists as well as other mailbox items. The local replica generated by an Outlook OST file is automatically synchronized with the source mailbox data. When a user connects to the Exchange server, the differences between the OST replica and the original mailbox stored on the server are synchronised in order for both versions to remain up-to-date with each other.
