The PST (Outlook Personal Information Store File) is a file extension used by Microsoft Outlook to save its emails, calendar entries, contacts, tasks and other associated items. Characteristic of this file extension is that messages and other items are kept in individual folders, according to their classification. Microsoft Outlook stores information on its central database known as an.ost file, but these can only accessed when connected to a server. The PST file stores copy of user's information locally on its hard drive, and is thus easily accessible without having an active network connection.
Detailed technical description
The PST file extension is a file format developed by Microsoft for storing personal data and messages, mainly used in Microsoft Outlook. This format is based on Windows API calls and is made up of 11 tables in total; three tables that hold the main folder hierarchy, one table for all message but not attachments identified by Message ID, attachment table, three tables for calendars, contacts and notes. The format also contains an index to help quickly perform searches over the content contained in the PST file.
The PST file extension is similar to.ost,.mso,.msg and.pab file extensions.
