File extension .BKS
|Microsoft Works Spreadsheet Document Backup Format||Microsoft||Settings Files|
The BKS ( .BKS) file is a settings file associated with Microsoft Windows NTBackupapplication. It is used to store settings related to the backup procedure, such as which files and folders are to be backed up, how often the backups should take place, where the backups should be stored, etc. BKS files were created by Microsoft Visual SourceSafe prior to version 6.0.
Structure of BKS Files
BKS files contain two parts: the header and contents section. The header or metadata section at the beginning of the file includes the name of the source backup set, the caption associated with it, its type, and other information related to backup operation. The content section contains data about what should be backed up and tells NTBackup which files and folders it should include in the backups. Data is written in BKS file in proprietary binary format.
BKS is a proprietary file format and can be opened only with Microsoft Windows NTBackup application. There are a few other similar file formats used by other backup applications for storing settings like .BBF, .FDB, .GHS, .INI, and .TIB.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .BKS) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .BKS extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .BKS file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .BKS extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .BKS extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .BKS file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .BKS file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .BKS file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .BKS file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .BKS file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
