The INI (Windows Initialization File) file extension is a plain-text data file used in the Microsoft Windows operating system. It stores system configuration information and settings for software applications that are typically written in a .INI format. The file contains text-based properties, settings, and values that are identified by keywords and organized into sections, such as the General Settings and Advanced Settings sections.
INI files are divided into sections which are identified by square brackets on either side and contain options, parameters, and other values. These values can be manipulated manually or by using a program, such as the Regedit utility of Windows. INI files may be accessed to alter the way the application menu appears, establish values for menu items or automate tasks such as setting printer resolution defaults or altering auto-start programs. Other similar file extensions to INI include .CFG, .INF, and PREV.
Advanced Options
The advanced user has the ability to create custom.INI files for specific data storage purposes. Options can be numerical, tabular, boolean, or literal. Boolean options must have either one of two possible values: True or False (1/0). Literal options contain simple text values such as path names, error message text, filenames, or folder names. For some applications, there are virtual.INI files which do not require disk storage and can be used once they are accessed.
Security Concerns
Security breaches can occur when INI files are improperly configured or stored in unsecured folders. Attackers can take advantage of these holes to gain access to private data and execute malicious code. It is thus recommended that all.INI files be set no higher than read-only to prevent modification, tampering, or deletion while giving users the necessary access privileges.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .INI) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .INI extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .INI file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .INI extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .INI extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .INI file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .INI file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .INI file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .INI file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .INI file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
