The XLS is a file extension used by the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet program for saving and storing spreadsheet documents. This format makes it possible to store words, formulas, formatting, macros, and other data in an organized bulletin format. XLS documents are typically used for business calculations, general accounting, budgeting and forecasting, or any range of other data storage tasks. They are able to be opened in any version of Microsoft Excel starting with version 1997.
Features
The advantages of using the XLS file format include the ability to store a large amount of data in a single document. XLS files can support up to 17 billion cells containing formulas and values across 16,000 columns and one million rows. Due to being a part of the Microsoft Office suite, it also provides users with excellent compatibility between different products of the line, making it possible to easily share data among them. As it follows certain standards, it assures compatibility with other tools like LibreOffice Calc in older versions.
Similar Formats
Common similar file extensions include XLM, XLSB, XLSX, XLTX, XLTM, and XLAM. All of these extensions serve slightly different purposes within Microsoft Excel; for example, XLSX is a binary document format that does not contain macros and XLM is primarily used for legacy Excel 4 macro sheets.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .XLS) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .XLS extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .XLS file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .XLS extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .XLS extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .XLS file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .XLS file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .XLS file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .XLS file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .XLS file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
