XLTX stands for Excel .xltx Open XML Spreadsheet Template. The template contains all formatting and layout information that is used as a model upon which other spreadsheets can be based. By default, when creating a spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel, an.xltx file is used for the new spreadsheet. This type of file can also be created by other Microsoft Office applications such as Word and PowerPoint, although it is generally more associated with Excel. It is not recommended to open or edit XLTX files, as they are intended to be used as templates only.

XLTM and XLSM are similar file extensions for Spreadsheet Templates. An XLTM file is a specified Excel Template while a XLSM Excel Macro-Enabled Spreadsheet. XLSX files are different because they’re used for storing standard Excel workbooks.
