Microsoft Windows Scripting Format | Microsoft | Executable Files |
A Windows Script File, .WSF, is the native file format of the Windows Script Host technology, a Microsoft component which serves as the foundation for Windows-oriented scripting languages. These files can be written in either VBScript, JScript or XML, to enable them to take advantage of the wide variety of hosted objects built into the Microsoft Windows environment.
Operation of a.wsf File Type
Linking directly with the .exe environment, the Windows Script Files can form part of Windows Installers which run scripts interactively or using command-line parameters. This type of file can also be used to fill in forms on web pages or run script-based programs and composite packages. Most commonly, they are used when building.exe-style programs which require a certain level of script automation, such as Windows Installers,.msi files or .inf files. Other similar file formats include .vbs, .vbe, .js, .jse, and .xml.
Creating and Editing
Windows Script Files can be created and edited using text editors like Microsoft Notepad. These files may also be loaded into code editors such as Visual Studio Code and TextPad, offering a multitude of scripting features and enabling the user to properly develop complex Windows Installer Instances. Additionally, when creating.wsf files, they must have an ‘XML’ tag at the beginning which points to the scripting language that will be used in order for the file to correctly load.
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .WSF) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .WSF extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .WSF file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .WSF extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .WSF extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .WSF file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .WSF file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .WSF file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .WSF file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .WSF file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
