EXE (or .EXE) is a Windows Executable File. It is the common file type for most applications and programs used on Microsoft Windows operating system. EXE files contain programs or pieces of code that have been compiled and can be executed with instructions from the computer's operating system. An EXE file starts with a set of header bytes which are used to identify the file type and also acts as a self-contained container for all the other contents of the EXE.
Similar File Types
Other executable types include: SYS,.DLL,.DRV,.OCX,.FON,.SCR,.CPL and.COM. Like other Microsoft Windows executable files, .EXE files can be either 32-bit or 64-bit. The two set of executable code is not compatible between different platforms. For example, a 32-bit application can't run natively on 64-bit Windows operating systems.
Note about EXE Files
Note that certain .EXE files are associated with certain malicious software or viruses, though they can also be necessary system files. Many legitimate applications install and create their own .EXE files and place them in appropriate folders on the computer. As such, it is important to be aware of EXEs that were installed by the user as compared to ones installed by default (with the operating system) or ones from dubious sources.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .EXE) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .EXE extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .EXE file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .EXE extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .EXE extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .EXE file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .EXE file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .EXE file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .EXE file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .EXE file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
