WEBP ( WEBP) is a type of image file format created by Google. It features both lossless and lossy compression, making it an ideal choice for web images. WEBP files are similar to JPEG and PNG, but they are typically smaller in size while offering comparable levels of quality. The compressed size of WEBP also allows for smaller webpage loading times when compared to other image formats.
Compression Details
The degree of compression and image quality provided by WEBP varies with respect to the source image. In general, images with vivid colors (like photographs) produce the best results. This is due to the high level of chrominance (or color detail) contained in these images, which WEBP is designed to compress efficiently. Additionally, WEBP can handle up to 16 bits per pixel channel, allowing images of higher bit-depths than PNG, such as those from Adobe Photoshop, to retain more details and quality when compressed. Comparing to other common formats, lossy WEBP has seen up to 45% smaller file size than JPEG, and up to 34% smaller file size than same quality lossy PNG. Several other file formats such as JPG, GIF, and BMP can be converted into WEBP without significant degradation in quality.
Compatibility
Currently, WEBP is supported by several desktop web browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge. WEBP can also be used by popular mobile browsers, including Safari on iOS devices running iOS 11 or higher. Most image viewing programs can open WEBP files, including web-based services like Adobe Photoshop Express, Windows programs such as Microsoft Windows Photos, and various third-party applications like XnView. Similar file extensions include JPEG, JPG, PNG, GIF, and BMP.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .WEBP) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .WEBP extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .WEBP file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .WEBP extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .WEBP extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .WEBP file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .WEBP file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .WEBP file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .WEBP file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .WEBP file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
