File extension .WEBLOC
Full Name | Developer | Category |

Apple Mac OS X Finder Internet URL | Apple | Web Files |
The .webloc file type is used by Mac OS X to store web link shortcut. It consists of a resource fork containing a URL string and an Internet Location File (ILF) locator which stores the URL in the data fork. This shortcut allows the user to open the specific web page or location as if they had typed the URL into their web browser. .webloc files are traditionally associated with Apple's own web browser, Safari, but many other browsers also support the use of such shortcuts. The file extension .webloc can be created by dragging and dropping a website link from Safari and placing it in the target folder.
Technical Details
A .webloc file is encoded in Apple's proprietary Unicode Text Encoding Format (UTF-8). This encoding allows the file to store characters outside the traditional ASCII character set (which includes international language symbols). When opened and parsed, the webloc. file looks similar to an XML document, having the following root tags: < dict >< key >URL</key >< string >http://www.example.com</string >< /dict > . When opened, a browser will recognize this XML document and use it to open the specified URL.
Related File Extensions
Other Macintosh web link related file extensions include .url, alisdb, dldb, and .as. Windows webslink links are typically stored as .url files.
Programs for MAC system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .WEBLOC) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .WEBLOC extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .WEBLOC file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .WEBLOC extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .WEBLOC extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .WEBLOC file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .WEBLOC file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .WEBLOC file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .WEBLOC file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .WEBLOC file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
