MAR files are recognized as software archives produced with Mozilla Archive Format. First of all, MAR files contain exactly the same contents like standard JAR archives, but, in addition to it, they include the differential updates that may be applied to other archives ( JAR archives or not). Basically, a MAR file is divided into four sections: a header providing basic information about MAR archive, a main section containing the update files (each of them is stored in contents), optional additional sections (functional dependencies and external signatures) and footer.
Differential Updates section
The Main Section stores differential updates applied to the same version of the original archive. This part contains such files - diff, patch and retention list. The difference is that the diff file contains only differences between files from archive and related update pack which was created by Mozilla application. As for the patch file - it includes only those bytes which provides more complete set of differences between two archives. Last file type stored in separate MAR archives is the retention list which defines which files should be retained in case of absence of some of them in original archive.
