Creative Labs Sound Format | Creative Labs | Audio Files |
The VOC file extension is used to denote Creative Labs Audio Files. It was an early digital audio format found on Creative's Sound Blaster sound cards and used by many popular games during the DOS era. The VOC File format has become obsolete since then, even though it has remained popular with some users due to its support for a wide range of audio sampling rates.
A VOC file consists of a header followed by one or more audio data blocks, each containing an 8- or 16-bit monaural sample of audio. Data can be stored uncompressed for optimum sound quality, or compressed using several algorithms including CVSD (Continuously Variable Slope Delta-modulation) and GSM (Group Special Mobile compression). There are also tricks used to reduce sample sizes, such as using only 4 bits per sample instead of 8.
Popularity
VOC Files were capable of reproducing high-quality audio with sample bit depths of 8bits, 11bits, 12bits, 16bits and 32bits, making them suitable for multimedia applications. These files were supported by game developers such as Origin and id Software, which leveraged the support for digital music in Computer Sound Blaster Audio Cards. Furthermore, the VOC file format was backward compatible with earlier versions.
Similar Formats
Some similar file formats to VOC include .WAV, .AIFF, .RAW, .SND, and .AU. Modern audio applications use either the WAV format, which supports both PCM and ADPCM formats, or the more advanced MP3 format which supports lossy audio compression.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .VOC) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .VOC extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .VOC file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .VOC extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .VOC extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .VOC file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .VOC file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .VOC file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .VOC file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .VOC file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
