Digital Camera Photo RAW Image Format | N/A | Camera Raw Files |
RAW (Raw Image Data File) is a type of file used in digital photography and contains the pixel data captured by the camera's sensor. This data is uncompressed and untouched by any image manipulation software, making it ideal for digital photography purposes. RAW files can be opened with photo-editing programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, and Corel PaintShop Pro.
RAW files contain more photo information than a standard JPG or PNG file, as well as higher quality image data from the camera's sensor. It is capable of holding more bit depths than JPEG and can store an array of color space from different sensors (called CFA for Color Filter Array). Some other RAW file formats are CR2 (Canon), NEF (Nikon), ARW (Sony), ORF (Olympus) and DNG (Digital Negative).
Advantage of RAW Formats
RAW formats are highly advantageous to digital photography because they provide photographers with more ease when editing and publishing their images. Since it does not contain any compression, it allows photographers to get exact details out of their images without any loss of information. The amount of detail provided makes it easier to work with images, allowing photographers to change things like exposure, saturation, vibrancy, contrast, and white balance without sacrificing quality. Additionally, many digital cameras now come with an in camera raw processing capabilities which makes quick adjustments easier than ever before.
File Name Extension
The file extension for RAW files varies depend on the brand of sensor found in the camera used but all generic RAW files use the extension.RAW. Other similar file extensions are: .CRW, .CR2, .NEF, .DNG, .ARW, and .ORF.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .RAW) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .RAW extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .RAW file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .RAW extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .RAW extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .RAW file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .RAW file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .RAW file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .RAW file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .RAW file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
