Garmin GPS PCX5 Track Format | CompeGPS TEAM | Data Files |
The TRK (CompeGPS Land Track File) file extension is used by CompeGPS Land, a mapping and GPS software produced by CompeGPS Team. It stores data about GPS tracks, including latitude, longitude, distance and altitude information. This data allows users to create and view maps of their trails as the software can display the information geographically. TRK files are used to generate GPS route cards which can be used to share detailed information about a particular trail.
TRK files are stored in a binary format while other similar CompeGPS Land file types such as .TXP, .TLB, .TWF, and .TPL are all XML based documents. Each unique file type reads in its own specific set of parameters. For example, a TXP file is a text file that holds waypoint information whilst a TLB holds descriptions for the saved trails. A TWF carries trail details and finally, the TPL holds details of digital photographs taken with a GPS camera and linked to routes.
Structure
Internally, TRK files are composed of commands that define their contents, based on a ASCII data and contain sections with four general subsections: coordinates (latitude and longitude), UTM-coordinates (coordinates of terrestrial system), navigation information(date, time, speed), and data about accelerometer-sensors.
Compatibility
TRK files can be opened with programs such as CompeGPS Land, Garmin BaseCamp, EasyGPS, Garmin Express, and Global Mapper. Other software packages support these files indirectly by being able to import other types of CompeGPS Land files such as TXP, TLB, TWF or TPL which can then be converted into other file formats.

Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .TRK) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .TRK extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .TRK file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .TRK extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .TRK extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .TRK file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .TRK file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .TRK file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .TRK file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .TRK file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
