The PRG file extension is associated with a range of various operating systems and software programs, including .PRG files used on Commodore 64 machines, .PRG (programme) files used with the Windows Pascal language, and program files for open source graphical toolkits such as GTK+ and wxWidgets.
Commodore 64 PRG files contain executable machine language code. These program files were used to write, store and execute code on the Commodore 64 Home Computer from 1982-1994. This particular type of file commonly ended with the .PRG, creating an extension which can still be recognised by Windows via an appropriate emulator. The file is usually saved in an uncompressed format, although some may also exist in.zip or.gz files.
PRG File Features
Files of this type usually contain a number of unique properties, such as the load address, which is where the code will be loaded into memory to run; the end address, which determines how much space will be required for storage; and the jump address, which allows execution to be programmed by taking specific actions once the code has been loaded into memory. Windows Pascal.PRG files contain binary object code which can be linked together with other libraries to create executable units. Programmers also had access to instructions from within their.PRG files for configuring memory management.
