The PM6 file extension stands for a PageMaker 6.0 Document created with the now obsolete desktop publishing software, Adobe PageMaker. This document format is still used to some extent today and has been used with several versions of Adobe PageMaker. It is a multi-platform text and graphic-based file, which was commonly used to create publications such as books, pamphlets, magazine articles, newsletters and more.

A PageMaker 6.0 document contains text, formatting, graphics and other elements that are used to produce the desired layout of the publication. This includes shapes, imported graphics, fonts, typographic features, before-and-after paragraph markers and tables. PageMaker documents also use master page sheets which contain headers, frames and settings that are applied to multiple pages within the publication.
Compatibility
Although no longer supported or developed by Adobe Systems Inc., PageMaker 6.0 documents can still be opened and edited by various versions of Adobe InDesign, including the latest versions of CS6 and CC (Creative Cloud). Some earlier versions of Microsoft Word may open and edit PM6 documents as well. If not supported by the current version of Word or InDesign, the document should be saved in a newer version such as PMD or IND (InDesign Document). Other similar programs that can open PM6 files include P65, PMD and PM7.
