The PMF file extension identifies files related to the proprietary data format developed by ESRI. ESRI is an acronym for Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc., a GIS software company based in California, USA. A PMF file is a composition of vector data layers combined into a single, static representation of a given geographic space. This file type was developed to facilitate the storage and publication of geographical data for use with various other programs and applications like ArcGIS.

How to Open a PMF File

ArcGIS Editor for OSM (OpenStreetMap) is free to download from the ESRI website, while both ArcGIS Pro and the more limited ArcGIS Desktop programs are available as paid subscriptions. In addition to this list of programs, the freeware viewer “ArcReader” can be used also.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .PMF) with the new application.
