The .PICT file extension is a raster graphics based picture filetype developed by Aldus Corporation and is now owned by Adobe Systems. The .PICT files are binary-encoded and can contain complex information such as both vector as well as bitmap graphics, images and text.
File Format
The PICT format is an extremely flexible image storage file format that can be used to store digital images ranging from very simple to very complex. It supports bitmap and vector-based pictures along with colors in a range from 1-bit grayscale to 24-bit color. Its native resolution is 72 ppi (pixels per inch) and it uses local coordinates based on the location of the origin, or the top left corner (1,1) of the picture being drawn. It also supports a variety of compression capabilities such as JPEG, JPEG 2000, Lossless Compression, among others.
Software Compatibility
The .PICT file extension is compatible with a number of graphics programs such as Microsoft Image Composer, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Macromedia Freehand, and other popular image editing applications compatible with Mac OS systems. Even GIMP, an open source image and photo editing program can open these files without any issues.
Similar file extensions that can be opened with .PICT file type include: .PCT, .PIC, .PIX, and .PDD
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .PICT) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .PICT extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .PICT file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .PICT extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .PICT extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .PICT file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .PICT file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .PICT file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .PICT file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .PICT file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
