The E01 file extension, is an EnCase Image file. It is a raw disk image produced by EnCase, a digital forensic software authored and marketed by Guidance Software. This specific file type can only be created and visualized using the professional version of EnCase, and cannot be opened or interpreted by other programs.
An E01 file includes all information from the physical disk, including deleted files, slack space, alternate data streams, file system attributes and structure, as well as partition boot sectors and hidden sectors. The E01 file's forensic content is uncompressed and stored in binary form, making it an excellent option for digital forensics professionals who require a bit-by-bit analysis of the original disk. In order to play files from an E01 file, another application must interface with EnCase, a tedious task requiring scripting or programing.

The E01 format allows for the acquisition of data without alteration and enables the user to analyze a single source instead of multiple sources.
