Compressed MusicXML Music Notation Format | The MuseScore Team | Audio Files |
MXL files are .MXL files, an audio file format for encoding music notation in a compressed file using MusicXML. This XML-based format is commonly encountered when working with digital scores that require more expressive capabilities than traditional MIDI or sound samples provide. It is an effective way of organizing the components of a musical score into a readable, efficient package that can be accessed and interpreted by any MusicXML compatible application and hardware device.
MXL files were created to provide compatibility between notation software, Digital Audio Workstations, and support of live performance on electronic instruments. Because of their efficient compression, this format can be used for playback purposes in relatively small file sizes when compared to regular MusicXML files or regular audio file types such as WAV. When saving as an MXL file, a user can set different quality options such as compression rate, sample rate, mono/stereo playback and more.
Applications that Use MXL files
MXL files are used in numerous applications from notation editors like Finale, Sibelius, and Cubase, to Digital Audio Workstations and media players such as GarageBand. They are also compatible with many hardware devices such as certain Casio keyboards and Yamaha instruments.
MXL files are commonly found alongside other music notation formats such as .MUS, .CAF, .MIDI, and XVY. They may also be encountered with the associated .MXD file types, which contain a set of instructions for digitally rendering a piece of music encoded by the associated MXL file.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .MXL) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .MXL extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .MXL file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .MXL extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .MXL extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .MXL file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .MXL file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .MXL file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .MXL file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .MXL file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
