Windows Easy Transfer Migration Data Format | Microsoft | Backup Files |
The MIG (Windows Migration Backup File) file extension is used for a Windows Backup file created during the migration process in Windows OS. The file is stored in an open XML format and contains the configuration information of both the source and destination computer or user profile. It may contain profile settings, hardware driver list, application settings, and other data that was backed up in the original computer.
In order to create a MIG file, the Windows OS utility Windows Easy Transfer must be used. This program allows a user to transfer their data from an old Windows computer to a new computer. After creating the backup, the MIG file can be used to redeploy the migration settings by using another Windows Easy Transfer utility on the new computer.
Similar File Extensions
Other file extensions related to settings and configuration files are .REG, .CFG, .INI and RGT.
Additional Features
The MIG file can also be used for backing up organization computers, as it can be configured with all the network settings and security measures as well. The MIG backup can also be compressed for more portability, and multiple computers can have their backups merged into one single MIG file using Windows Easy Transfer Manager.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .MIG) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .MIG extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .MIG file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .MIG extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .MIG extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .MIG file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .MIG file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .MIG file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .MIG file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .MIG file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
