The JAD file extension is a Java Application Descriptor file, which stores information about a Java application intended to be used on a mobile device such as a mobile phone. It contains theJava class name and MIDlet-Name, which is the public name of the application. It may also store additional attributes such as MIDlet-Version, MIDlet-Vendor, MIDlet-Data-Size, MicroEdition-Profile and MicroEdition-Configuration. All of these fields help identify the MIDlet application.
MIDlets are similar in concept to applications written for other computing platforms; however, they are usually much smaller and less complex in order to suit the mobile platform. This smaller size helps to ensure that the application runs within the limited memory and resources of the device. The JAD information may provide extra information to aid with installation of additional files necessary for the installation of a larger device. Other similar file extensions are .jar, .java, .class, and jadx.
Uses Of JAD File Extension
The JAD file should be distributed along with the accessible Java application (MIDlet). Without this descriptor file, many mobile devices are not able to successfully locate and install the application correctly since they rely on the data provided by this file for installation purposes. The JAD file also allows users to view specific information pertaining to an application before it is installed such as author details, descriptive information and size of the application.
Opening A JAD File
JAD files can be opened on many devices natively; e.g., on a BlackBerry or Windows Mobile, you would need to use their AppLoader utilities. However, due to security reasons, you will not be able to open them on other platforms such as Windows or Mac. For those working on Desktop systems, JAD Maker is useful for exploring their contents. Additionally JADEdit an open source editor designed specifically for manipulating and creating Java application descriptor files.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .JAD) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .JAD extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .JAD file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .JAD extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .JAD extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .JAD file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .JAD file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .JAD file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .JAD file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .JAD file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
