Java Bytecode Class Format | Oracle | Developer Files |
The CLASS file extension is used by Java software to represent compiled Java programs. A .CLASS file contains machine code called bytecode, which can be read and executed by Java Virtual Machine (JVM), an interpreter for code written in Java language. This bytecode of compiled program have stable format, and that makes it possible to launch compiled programs on any machine and operating system that has a suitable Java virtual machine installed.
The first time such a compiled program is run, the resulting CLASS file may need to be stored, depending on the designer’s intent. On subsequent runs, the same CLASS file is then read and interpreted by JVM.
Advantages of using CLASS File Extension
The main advantage of using CLASS file extension is its independence from the underlying platform; once compiled into a Java bytecode, any program can be shared between different operating systems as long as it has been designed to work with Java. As these files are lightweight and almost immune to platform-specific problems, they are ideal for distributing and launching applications quickly.
Similar File Extensions
Other similar file extensions commonly used for distributing Java applications are .JAR, .WAR, and .EAR. Additionally, platform-specific versions such as .EXE, .DLL, and .SO are available for Windows, MacOS, Linux and other systems.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .CLASS) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .CLASS extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .CLASS file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .CLASS extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .CLASS extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .CLASS file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .CLASS file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .CLASS file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .CLASS file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .CLASS file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
