ICalendar Calendar File Format (Microsoft Outlook, Apple ICal) | N/A | Misc Files |
The *.ICS extension is the standard file type associated with the iCalendar application. This application is used to store information related to schedules, tasks, events, and other activities in a standardized format. It is used mainly by Internet users to share calendar information with other users or to transfer data between different systems. The data that is stored within these files is encoded according to the standards that are specified in the Internet Engineering Task Force's RFC 2445 document.
Structure & Format of iCalendar Files
In general, an iCalendar file follows the vCalendar structure as defined by the IETF. It starts with a "VCal" tag that identifies it as a standard vCalendar version 2.0 file. The file then contains a "VEVENT" tag for each event included in the file. After this comes "GCAL" tags, which contain alarms and recurring events, followed by "VTODO" tags for scheduling tasks and reminders. Each of these tags typically includes a start and an end date, along with other related pieces of information.
In addition to the *.ICS format, iCalendar files can also be stored in other formats such as *.VCF, *.XML, and *.ICALS. Being an open standard, the underlying format of these files remains relatively unchanged across different platforms.
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .ICALENDAR) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .ICALENDAR extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .ICALENDAR file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .ICALENDAR extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .ICALENDAR extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .ICALENDAR file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .ICALENDAR file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .ICALENDAR file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .ICALENDAR file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .ICALENDAR file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
